GOSPEL

"Gospel" derives from the Greek euangelion, literally "good tidings" (see Lk. 2:10 where it is fully translated). The gospel (mentioned more than 75 times in the N.T.) is the good news of a plan of redemption for fallen man. Much can be learned about the gospel by a consideration of certain phrases used with the term. (a) It is the "gospel of God" (Mk. 1:14) because it reflects the Father's eternal plan (Eph. 3:10-11). (b) It is the "gospel of Christ," (Mk. 1:1), being focused upon the Lord's mission, and validated by his death. (c) It is the "gospel of grace" (Acts 20:24) because man is undeserving of it. (d) It is the "gospel of salvation" (Eph. 1:13) because salvation is obtained only by obedience to its commands. (e) It is the "gospel of peace" (Eph. 6:15) because obedience to the commands of the system brings peace with God. (f) It is the "gospel of the kingdom" (Mt. 4:23) because in submitting to it we enter the kingdom of Christ. This gospel must be preached (Mk. 16:15), believed (Mk. 1:15), obeyed (2 Thes. 1:8; 1 Pet. 4:17), and defended (Phil. 1:16). Moreover, the Christian must live so as to cause no hindrance to the gospel (1 Cor. 9:12).
