HEAVEN

The term "heaven" is used in different ways in the Bible. (a) The expression may refer to the atmospheric region just above the earth wherein the birds fly, the rain is formed, and in which the wind blows (Gen. 1:10; 7:11; Dan. 8:8). (b) The outer space region that houses the stars, the sun, and the planets is also designated as "heaven" or the "heavens" (Gen. 1:14; 15:5; Isa. 13:10). Both of these above-us material regions will be destroyed at the time of the Lord's return (Mt. 24:35; 2 Pet. 3:7ff; Rev. 21:1). (c) The abode of God is also designated as "heaven" (Psa. 11:4; Mt. 5: 16; 6:9), though the focus of his presence there must not be viewed in a way so as to negate the concept of his presence everywhere (Jer. 23:24). This spiritual region is also known as the "heaven of heavens" (Dt. 10:14; Psa. 115:16), or "the third heaven" (2 Cor. 12:2). This glorious place (Jn. 14:2) will be the final reward of all the faithful (Col. 1:5; 1 Pet. 1:4). Heaven, for the saints, will involve many things. It will be a wonderful place of rest (Heb. 4:11; Rev. 14:13), in which we will reap the rewards of earthly labors (Gal. 6:9; Mt. 6:19; Lk. 16:9; 1 Cor. 3:14). Heaven will be an environment of great rejoicing for the victory won (Mt. 25:21; Rev. 12:11-12; 19:7). It will be a realm of responsibility -- a further state of service to God (Rev. 22:3; Lk. 19:16-19). Heaven also will involve precious reunions of the faithful (Gen. 25:8; 35:29; 37:35; 2 Sam. 12:23; Mt. 8:11; 1 Thes. 2:19-20). Surely the Christian must dedicate himself so as not to miss this ultimate glory. (d) Finally, the term "heaven" is sometimes used figuratively for God himself (Mk. 11:30; Lk. 15:18, 21).
