KINDNESS

Kindness (chrestos) may be defined as that which is characterized by honesty, friendliness, goodness, generosity, compassion, etc. The term is used in the N.T. in two main senses. (a) Kindness describes the attitude and actions of God toward the rebellious human race. Heaven's kindness is not fickle, as is the case with flawed humanity; it endures forever (Psa. 106:1). It was manifest in the plan of redemption (Eph. 2:7ff; Tit. 3:4), and is the motivation for our obedience (see: Lk. 6:35; Rom. 2:4 -- chreston "goodness"). (b) Kindness is a most desirable trait in people (Prov. 19:22). It is a quality in those who possess love for others (1 Cor. 13:4; cf. Prov. 31:26). Kindness is a fruit of the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit (Gal. 5:22), and it is the cement that holds brothers in Christ together (Eph. 4:31-32).
