Dear Friend of the Christian Courier,
I have some very important news to share with you today.
As you may know, Wayne Jackson's
A New Testament Commentary is one of the most successful resources we've ever produced for personal Bible study and preparation for teaching.
Subsequently, Wayne wrote a commentary on
The Prophets, which is also very popular among Bible students who are interested in exploring the rich prophetic material in the Old Testament.
Today, we are announcing the publication date of
The Books of Moses -- An Old Testament Commentary, Volume I.
A Little History on Wayne's
Old Testament Commentary Series
When Wayne finished his commentary on the New Testament, many asked if he would write a commentary on the Old Testament, but that seemed overwhelming at first.
And so ... he thought: "Maybe just the major prophets." Before long, the "major prophets" turned into a manuscript covering the whole Old Testament prophetic library ... no small task by itself.
Writing a single-volume commentary on The Prophets required intense study and long days at the computer. It was perhaps the most challenging work he had ever done -- being both physically demanding and intellectually exhausting, but also personally rewarding.
Often, while my father was working on the project, I would come to his home for a visit. As we talked, he closed his eyes, tilted his head to the right, and told me how rich the study had been that day.
When The Prophets was complete, he was drained but satisfied. It took several months to raise the financial backing to publish the book and complete all the editing and proofing.
So Wayne rested from his labor, but not for long. He was "in a groove," so to speak. Soon, he was back in his study, working on a secret project he dared tell no one ... not even his wife, Betty, at first.
In his quiet "study" (that’s what he always called his home office), he prayed that he could live long enough to complete a commentary on the entire Old Testament. It would be a daunting task.
Quickly, he began organizing his research materials, considering how he would approach the project, what he most wanted to accomplish in the commentary, and many other details. Just planning his research, study, and writing could be overwhelming. He loved the Psalms, but the history of Israel was also a favorite.
Where would he start? Why not at the beginning?
In earnest, he started running the final marathon of his life. Over the next year, he completed three manuscripts -- The Books of Moses, as well as one on the history of Israel and the poetic books of the Old Testament.
And that’s how The Prophets became "Volume IV."
MOSES: THE MOST ATTACKED BIBLE WRITER
Moses -- God’s great deliverer of Israel. This is where Wayne began.
If there was one thing he knew from his years of Bible study, it was this: no part of the Bible is under greater attack than Moses.
Evolutionists attack the days of Creation. Critical theorists attack the authorship and inspiration. Homosexuals attack the saga of Sodom. Modernists attack the miracles of deliverance from Egypt. Muslims attack Abraham’s promised son, Isaac. Atheists attack the holiness of God in the ancient regulations and Divine judgments. The Flood is assaulted as a myth by those who hate the God of the Bible.
And here's the problem. There was once a time when you could count on our brethren to stand up and defend God’s word. But more and more, as many wilt under the assault of "higher education," the white flag is meekly raised in utter surrender. "It doesn't really matter what you believe, as long as you are sincere" has become a common refrain.
Let it be known: there are consequences to that sort of weakness.
Of course, if you've been following Wayne's work for very long, you'd expect him to face the evolutionary attacks on Genesis in full battle gear. Apologetics was a central theme to a significant part of his work.
But here’s what caught me by surprise (it shouldn’t have). The depth and thrilling truths he mined from the text in the rest of Moses’ foundational work.
You can almost feel Wayne's spiritual joy in Moses' victory over Pharaoh’s stubborn resistance. His encouragement for us to be faithful in light of Israel's lack of trust in Jehovah.
And perhaps most of all, Wayne's passionate and poignant thoughts on the priesthood of Christ as it unfolds in the wilderness through the administration of Aaron.
His thoughts will stir the gratitude of your heart for the wonderful plan and precise fulfillment of our salvation.
