Colossae was a city about 100 miles east of Ephesus. Paul wrote a letter to the church in this city. It was one of his four epistles from Rome (Acts 28), while he was in prison.
The letter of Colossians is both doctrinal and practical. It deals principally with a heresy that threatened the saints in this city. The false doctrine had elements of Judaism and Gnosticism, an erroneous concept alleging special knowledge from God.
Gnosticism involved such heretical ideas as the worship of angels (Col. 2:18). The apostle addresses this error, urges the brethren to exalt Christ, and to be faithful in their Christian living.
