DEMONS

What Are the Demons We Read About in the Bible?
Demons (not "devils" KJV) were evil spirits (Mt. 12:43-45) that were permitted to inhabit the bodies of some people during the days of Christ and his apostles.

Almost certainly, this was to allow the Savior and his men the opportunity to demonstrate the superiority of God's power over Satan (see Mt. 12:28-29; Lk. 10:17-18; 1 Jn. 4:4). That power was shown to be effective over nature (Mt. 8:23-27), disease (Mt. 9:20-22), and death (Jn. 11:1-45).

Demon possession and the divine authority to expel evil spirits ceased when the New Testament record was completed, and the need to confirm divine revelation was no longer necessary (1 Cor. 13:8ff).
