GOD

"God" (theos) is the name of the divine nature. "God" simply signifies the essence of being deity. Important facts regarding the Deity are these: (a) There is one God (Dt. 6:4; Jas. 2:19), i.e., a unified divine nature consisting of the sum total of those qualities that distinguish a Being as divine. Some of the non-moral traits of deity are: eternality, omnipotence, omniscience, omnipresence, etc. Moral qualities of God include: holiness, love, benevolence, justice, mercy, etc. (b) The divine nature is possessed by three distinct personalities, revealed in the N.T. as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Father is God (Eph. 1:3), as is the Son (Jn. 1:1; 20:28; Heb. 1:8), and the Holy Spirit as well (Acts 5:3-4). Though God may not be demonstrated physically, as in a scientific method, nonetheless, a prima facie case for his existence is so overwhelming that only the fool denies it (Psa. 14:1; Rom. 1:20ff). See ATHEISM. God's existence may be argued logically on the basis of: (a) Cause/Effect. God is the only adequate cause to explain the Universe. (b) Design/Designer. The intricate order/design of the Universe demands a Designer, thus, an Intelligence, which, in turn implies Personality. (c) Moral Sense/Moral Ruler. The moral sensitivity of the human family suggests an ultimate moral Source by which right and wrong are measured. As atheist Jean Paul Sartre conceded: "If there is no God, nothing is wrong."
